George Santayana commented that "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" and that now applies to those of-short-memory who itch to meddle in Iranian affairs. A better diplomacy starting point would be to ask, "Why do they not like us?" Perhaps the interpersonal diplomacy phrase, "Do unto others as you would have them do to you" could be tried in international relations.
A good place to start the understanding of international Iran would be to the turn of the 20th Century, when petroleum replaced coal for powering the Industrial Revolution. Despite its historic tradition of autonomy and nationalism, Persia was progressively weakened by corrupt and inept rulers. Backed by the formidable military in 1872, a "British Company; bought a concession" to manage the Iranian army, print currency, establish banks, irrigate farms and exploit minerals - including large oil fields. In 1906, Iranian Constitutional Revolution led to the establishment of both a parliament and a national electoral system to replace Shah Ahmad's dying Qajar dynasty.
