Gas prices dip below $3 a gallon at some Billings stations
20.05.12
The average price for unleaded gas in Montana dropped to $3.09 a
gallon on Friday, said AAA Mountain West, but in Billings,
motorists could find it for $2.99 or cheaper at some stations.
The price was $2.99 a gallon for regular unleaded at both the
Conoco/Town Pump on King Avenue West and 32nd Street West and up
the street at the Holiday Station, at Rosebud Lane and 32nd Street
West.
The two convenience stores wage fierce, but friendly,
competition, and, customers say, usually have the cheapest fuel
around.
"We use binoculars," said Town Pump assistant manager LeAnn
Blanchard, to see the price posted at the Holiday. "If we go down
low, they go low. They're the same," Blanchard said,
double-checking with her bare eyes on Friday.
Over at the Holiday, Irene Matzen, the manager, confirmed the
competition. "Oh, yeah," Matzen said, as she cleaned the soda
machine.
Matzen regularly checks the Town Pump prices, tells her bosses
and adjusts the Holiday price accordingly. Matzen dropped the price
to $2.99 a gallon Friday morning.
