Construction jobs are growing in Tulsa area
Metropolitan Tulsa logged a 9 percent increase in construction jobs between November 2010 and November 2011, finishing the span with 22,000 jobs. About 1,800 construction jobs were added.
The local construction sector's growth rate beat out the state as a whole; a total of 4,100 construction jobs were added across Oklahoma during the 12-month period, a growth rate of 6 percent.
"An area like Oklahoma benefits because of the strength of the energy sector," said Ken Simonson, chief economist with Associated General Contractors of America. "Oklahoma never had a construction buildup, so the state only saw about half the decline the rest of the country did."
The nation's construction sector is being propped up by commercial construction, while residential building, especially for single-family dwellings, continues to fare poorly.
