Loss of several pillars downtown mars 2011
There was some good — and bad — news on the Henderson business scene in 2011. But ultimately, it will be remembered as the year that downtown lost several mainstay businesses that each had decades of heritage there.
Twenty-five-year old Homefolks Hardware and Gifts (which continued a lineage that dated to the opening of Norris Hardware downtown in 1870) and sister company Matt's News and Gifts (whose history dates to 1920) went out of business in August, victims of the weak economy, the opening of the big Lowe's home improvement store and a loss of business while Elm Street was closed at part of the downtown water and sewer line replacement project.
The nearby Henderson Paint and Glass store closed soon afterward after 64 years in business here; it, too, suffered from the feeble economy, the near-collapse in home building, competition from Lowe's and related factors. However, Warren Supply immediately relocated to the paint store building.
The retirement of owner W.D. Owens meant the closure of Henderson Electric after 50 years downtown.
