Ten in '12: What to Watch For in 2012

Course, we'll continue to bring you stories of stupid criminals, outstanding students and the awe-inspiring generosity that symbolizes living in the St. Vrain Valley.
In the spirit of the New Year, here are a few other things you'll read about in the coming year.
Downtown alleys getting a makeover
Held off until the New Year so as not to interfere with downtown holiday shopping, Longmont's Alleyscape project will start construction early this year in the 500 block east of Main Street.
The $3.76 million project will completely change the appearance of the downtown alleys. No more random Dumpsters: They will relocated into screened-off enclosures. Porous pavers will mean no more standing water in the springtime or ice patches in the winter. And the burying of all of the utility lines will create a much cleaner look to the alleys.
Though the alleys are generally safe now, the lighting in certain portions of certain alleys doesn't allow pedestrians to feel as safe as they should. New lighting will change that. And the redesign of the breezeways will take full advantage of their 25-foot width, something that doesn't happen with the current design.
