Why we need a strong Navy

The latest Iranian threat in the Persian Gulf demonstrates why we need a strong Navy today and in the future.
Iran's first vice-president warned five days ago that if Western nations put sanctions on Iran's oil exports, "then even one drop of oil cannot flow from the Strait of Hormuz." Iran's top naval commander said closing the Persian Gulf would be "easier than drinking a glass of water."
About 17 percent of the world's daily oil requirements come through the Strait, and its loss would be a major setback to the world economy. Indeed, any attempt to close this international waterway should be viewed as an act of war by those who use it. But experts point out that Iran also depends on oil exports to keep its economy going, and closing the strait would be economic suicide, as one anonymous Iranian oil ministry official told reporters. So the posturing by Iran is widely dismissed as a bluff.
Nevertheless, a recent article in Foreign Affairs magazine points out there is little doubt that Iran could give the U.S. Navy fits with its recently modernized forces in the Gulf and Indian Ocean. Our Navy would almost certainly prevail, and that keeps a leash on Iran's aggression.
