Al Mahroos bows out
BAPCO chief executive Faisal Al Mahroos has retired after 35 years, it was announced yesterday.
Energy Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza said Mr Al Mahroos would be replaced by Gordon Smith on New Year's Day.
Mr Smith has been deputy chief executive - refining and marketing, and has a background of extensive oil industry management experience at Chevron.
Mr Al Mahroos joined Bapco as petroleum engineer in 1976 and after holding senior positions, he was appointed chief executive in 2009.
Dr Mirza said Mr Al Mahroos played a key role in promoting Bahrain Field operations during the 1980s, which contributed to enhancing the field's reserve and the national economy.
"Mr Al Mahroos also made contributions to exploration activities and the deep gas and enhanced production project of Bahrain Field, which culminated in the establishment of Tatweer Petroleum Company," he added.
"He was also instrumental in contributing to the upgrade of oil technologies and sciences by organising and chairing oil forums in the Middle East."
