Wilson: Energy projects will help job growth

Second District Congressman Joe Wilson says he'll focus on cutting spending and creating jobs in the coming year.

Speaking at Henry's Travel Plaza on Thursday, Wilson said energy initiatives coming online next month headline efforts to increase employment opportunities.

"Next month we will have the grand opening at the Ameresco biomass facility," Wilson said. "It is a three-quarter-of-a-billion dollar investment. We have a lot of woody debris in this region and that will be used to provide energy.

"It will have a positive effect in this area, which is Allendale, Hampton, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties."

The unit is designed to provide 30 percent of the Savannah River Site's power once it is fully functional.

An advocate of smaller, modular nuclear reactors, Wilson also praised the cooperation between NuScale and the Fluor Corporation to build the units.

"I have been working with a member of another political party to help promote modular nuclear reactors," Wilson said. "This can create jobs.
