Year In Review
Each year at this time it is the custom of papers everywhere to reflect on the top stories of the year. Its a way of contemplating the passing year, and also a clever way of giving reporters and paper staff a bit of a break over the holidays.
Stepping into the noise of daily life throughout 2011, there were plenty of battles, victories and accomplishments. Selfishly speaking, perhaps none bigger than the survival of The Cordova Times. Hats off to the entire town on that one!
On a more serious note, the completion of Mt. Eccles Elementary School, the Humpback Creek hydro project and the outcome of the state redistricting process, which kept Cordova grouped with like-minded coastal communities, are pretty big stuff for a small town on the edge of nowhere.
Cordovas schools have consistently been the top story this year. Jim Nygaard was selected as Alaska Superintendent of the Year. Cara Heitz was recognized as Alaska Teacher of the Year. Sophia Meyers, CHS senior, took first place in her category and first place overall statewide for her science project at the Alaska State Science and Engineering Fair. Erin Hollowell, departing AP English teacher at CHS, was awarded State Student Adviser of the Year by the Alaska Association of Student Council Governments.
