News staff predicts newsmakers of 2012
22.05.12
With 2011 coming to a close, the editorial staff at the Tribune Chronicle looked ahead to predict what the biggest stories of 2012 will be. Looking at the stories as they had developed in the past year, the staff voted on the stories and newsmakers that we believe will grab headlines in the new year.
1. The Shale Drilling Boom
Drilling companies, gas companies, land partnerships and the leasing of private land became the story of 2011, and promises to get bigger in 2012.
In November, the Association of Landowners in the Ohio Valley, or ALOV, held a large meeting for its 1,100 members, owners of approximately 80,000 acres, in a show of unity among landowners working together in negotiations for oil and gas leasing rights.
Other groups have started recruiting landowners in hopes of bringing in the maximum price on their property .
As drilling companies and their representation continue to ramp up their efforts to get beneath the feet of the Mahoning Valley, the area is poised for the increase in jobs and income that will begin to come in.
